I'm becoming more & more a fan of John Norum's,mainly on the back of the last 2 Europe studio albums, which are both fabulous. This cd,originally dates back to 1992 & despite the awful, awful 'grunge' era taking over hard rock/heavy metal at that time,Norum had stuck to his guns,& produced an album of fabulous songs, packed to the raft with melody, riffs, chorus, fantastic solo's';proper tunes fabulously played & top singing. The main lead vocalist here is ex-Deep Purple legend;Glenn Hughes. That's a huge plus for me as I'm a major fan.Joey Tempest also guests on 'We will be Strong' too,of which the chorus is similarish to Whitesnake's 'Here I go Again'(if your going to 'borrow'then do it from quality). The material itself is full of uptempo heavy rockers, chugging riffs & face melting solo's,John's playing is a lot more flashier & more complex guitar hero stuff, than he is these days(his more recent playing with Europe is more melodic, subtler with great emphasis on tone & fabulous it is too). Even the ballad 'In your Eyes',is fabulous! There's also an instrumental too 'Endica',which fits in with the instrumental albums that Vai & Satriani & the like, were churning out at the time.Highlights? All of it!!, it's consistantly fabulous, amazing level of top material. If I had to pick a fav track, then at the minute it would be 'Distant voices' which wouldn't be out of place on Whitesnake's legendary 1987 album, great tune, very Sykesy-like solo. The title track too is brilliant. Why John Norum isn't mentioned in the same bracket as other 'supposed' guitar gods,I just don't know.Another fabulous bonus for me is the superb cover of 'Opium Trail' the Thin Lizzy classic.Great, great album, some naysayers may say it sounds of it's time,or a liitle dated, but with songs this good ,who cares??
