You probably won't like this the first couple of times you listen to it. Leave it a week and then listen again. You'll be surprised at how good this CD is. The songs have a high standard of production, good song writing and an epic heavy feel. Like most symphonic metal, it sounds like it could be a movie sound track. There's demonic male vocals, soaring female voices and layered instruments. This is not music to sing (it's far too complex and you'd break your teeth trying to whistle any of the songs), this is good music to listen to. It has lots of moods; it alternates between light and dark passages. If you wanted to know what the gothic dreams of a madman sound like or what the choirs of Hell sing for their own pleasure, listen to this.

In my opinion, yes.
The Beauty and the Beast vocals work perfectly; I think that in later albums they lost the balance and didn't go together so well. It's a shame that Veland left, though I'm very glad he did to form Sirenia.
Whether you're a firm symphonic/gothic metal fan or just want to listen to something a wee bit different, I'd highly recommend this album.

I absolutely LOVE this album. Every track is both inovative and involving (and some initially surprising). The whole album is deep, dark and relentless. Vibeke shines like a star and the band plays heavy. Maybe in this renaissance of female goth metal (WT etc), this album will get the extra elevation it deserves.

This CD is a good listen. Although I feel that the music often lacks feeling, this does mean that it is not good music. It just won't have you singing along. The death growls are good enough, and the female vocalist's voice is nice to listen to, but perhaps not heard enough. There is nothing really special about the guitar, bass and drumwork, but the violins, keyboards and other souds really make the CD worth listening to. Good, but not great.... but still worthy of any doom metal fan's collection.

what can you say about beyond the vail?
well firstly the songs are very good but not the bands best work yet, but the standards are up to all of tristania's usual exept it lacks that great buzz tristanias music gives you standards. As per usual the instrumental parts of the songs are truly inpacting espiecally the piano the best songs in my apinion are beyond the veil, opus relink and leathean river and all the other songs are exalent. I can say fairly confidently that this is about a 8 out of 10
