4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic, haunting, yet more..., 17 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best of All About Eve (Audio CD)
All About Eve always caught my attention with the beautiful clear vocals of Julianne Regan, the blend of romance and rock, and the folksy overall sound. Revisiting them on the "Best of" CD is no disappointment. It's all here - the haunting melody of "Martha's Harbour", the rocky "Tuesday's Child", the evocative "Gypsy Dance". The sounds have lost none of their charms, the music and vocals sound fresh. This is not a CD - or a group - to leave in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good intro, but there's even better out there, 19 Aug 2006

Simply because this is All About Eve it automatically gets five stars, as they are one of the most emotional and unique bands ever to grace a stage or stereo, and as an inexpensive introduction, it's very good, with an intersting mix of tracks. However, I would recommend anyone to get "Keepsakes", a newer double compliation that not only has the tracks from this CD, but also has brand new tracks AND a DVD of all their videos (plus a few extras as well). That way, you get to see that the beautiful voice also has a beautiful face!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Of: All About Eve - Paradise full of gold and silver., 1 April 2011

This excellent album is a great introduction to the work of the late `80s/early `90s group All About Eve. In 1988 Their biggest success, the haunting `Martha's Harbour' made a huge impression on my early teenage mind. It was a beautiful song then and still is today.

I bought this album just to have a copy of that song, but found plenty more here to enjoy. The group are impossible to pigeon hole and categorise. They effortlessly mix English folk and pastoral themes with a rocky, jazzy or bluesy motif as the need arises and the spirit moves them. With the delightful clear vocals of Julianne Regan in the forefront each track charms and entertains with a definite sense of style and elegance on each recording. There isn't a weak song on the album, 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly quintessential British folk(y) rock, 22 April 2011

I agree with another reviewer that one is simply entranced and drawn into these lovely, but still wholesomely decent folk rock songs by that 'perfect' voice of Julianne Regan.

I was always drawn to Simon & Garfunkel's 'Scarborough Fair' and All About Eve evoke that perfect English summer evening, all real ale and country pubs with hay bales. But then, also, the naughty fumble in the haystack and the midnight motorbike run across the moonlit moors.

The songs often have a savage beauty as a rhythm of rhyming guitars create a big wall of sound with that wonderful gifted songbird of a voice flitting around and over it. This makes great driving music and one that elates the spirits but is also balanced by the beautiful, baladeering of loves lost.

My CD of this has been lent out to more friends of mine than any other and everybody has loved it. I count it lucky each time it returns unscathed but am glad to have blessed one of my all time favourite CDs onto another who appreciates good music. All I can say is, imagine Clannad rocked up and you might be somewhere near!
