3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to write home about., 4 Feb. 2001

This review is from: Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow (Audio CD)
Free your mind is an okay album. It's nothing special, nowhere near as funky as their later work. Too much distortion and lack of bass. However the album does have some charm, even though there aren't many tunes on it. Songs such as 'Friday night August 14th' are superb. Its worth listening to if you're a big fan of funkadelic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only for harcore Funkadelic fans, 5 Feb. 2001

This album is more psychadelic than funk. When I first heard it I couldn't get used to all the dodgy production and distortion. But the more I play it the more I like it. Apparently Funkadelic made the album in one day while they were all on LSD, it sounds like they did too. Musically it sounds like a very spaced out Jimi Hendrix with lots of weird distortion and sometimes cheesy Sci-fi nosies. It has some great songs though. 'Friday night August 14th' is one of the stand outs for me, great vocal performances with real grit and energy and stinging guitar work from Eddie Hazel. Overall though its not an album I would recommend to the uninitiated. Start with 'One Nation Under A Groove'.
