4.0 out of 5 stars Speedy Vespa gives thumbs up to 60's Classics, 8 Feb 2004
This review is from: The Best Of (Audio CD)
For anyone whom, has heard,The Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and enjoyed that unique sound this album is a must have! The album covers all of Sams'hits from 1965-67 including Ju Ju Hand the follow up hit to Wooly Bully.By this time Sam and the Pharaohs had signed up to the mighty MGM.The song about the bearded bovine,WOOLY BULLY,certainly put Sam (Domingo Samudio)on the map here in blighty and in mainland Europe toting up 3million sales.
Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs are certainly a bit left-field as a 60's group but that didn't stop them have a good dozen or so catchy tunes , including , an excellent cover of that soul hit GROOVIN'.
A couple of nights ago I was watching Kubricks Full Metal Jacket,
half way through when Joker meets Cowboy in 'Nam the Wooly Bully kicks-in in the back ground.Kubrick doesn't just play a bit of the song , he has the whole track played!Excellent!Perhaps Stanley Kubrick was also a fan of Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs........

Excellent CD. Was looking for Li'l Red Riding Hood and found more wonderful tunes. Really pleased. They don't make them like this anymore! Delighted with purchase.

As some of the other reviewers have stated, Sam the Sham and The Pharaoes not just about the classic track " Woolly Bully" which is iconic. The remaining tracks are also worth a listen. There is a very good cover of the Young Rascals classic Groovin`. All in all a good value 60`s album. As for Woolly Bully every time you hear it makes you jump about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memphis Soul Stew, 31 Mar 2008
This review is from: The Best Of (Audio CD)
If there had been no British Invasion this is perhaps the kind of music which would have propelled the American music scene.
Taking Memphis as a starting point image wise in the sense of the Eastern one which named the American city the band were walking like Egyptians years before the Bangles
