This is the favourite of my several Mahler 3 recordings and, from what I gather from other reviewers, the high point of Bernstein's NY cycle from the 60s. There's no overindulgence and the recording is really vivid. For a very different, darker approach I like Tennstedt's studio version with the LPO. Levine is fine until the last movement which is protractedly slow. Lopez-Cobos is very literal-minded.
