(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Tragic Magic (Audio CD)
This is a very good album from a band which got better with every release.

Having stepped up from their first two indie-lite albums, this album, along with Hello June Fool, shows a maturity of songwriting, msicianship and production that few bands achieve.

The album's groovy feel and rhthyms have caused some to label it 'trip-hop', which may present too much of a 'dancy' image in your mind, but that influence is their alongside the indie-psychedelic ones.

Mary Lorson's voice has filled out and taken on more character by this time, which is another strength.

I dig this CD out and play it on a regular basis, and if you get it i hope you'll do the same.

Many of the best discoveries come by accident and this is how I came across Madder Rose. If a band are known by the company they keep then the sideways acknowledgment in the sleeve notes to Tanya Donelly only increased the anticipation. And well worth it it was too. This is an incredibly strong album with no apparent weak tracks. 'Hung Up In You' and 'Don Greene' are the soulful highlights, Mary Lorson's vocal gently conveying the pain of an unrequited love. Even the monologued 'Peter and Victor' is given a strange ethereal quality by the drifting backing vocals. A brilliant discovery. If Throwing Muses, Belly, 10,000 Maniacs fill your collection then Madder Rose should be added if they re not already there.
