Don Cherry at his best. Worldmusic avant la lettre. Avantgarde (before the bunch) jazz in the strict sense of the word. I think Miles would loved this record.

Don Cherry is an acclaimed jazz artist and i consider his "Brown Rice" LP as one of the best in jazz history. Apart from the personnel, which appeared in many other jazz masterpieces, the clarity of sound is exceptional. This CD/LP could be a point of reference for future producers and surely a most enjoyable record for many many years

there are some weirdos around. This is one of the few Don Cherry records that isn't an unlistenable mess. in fact it's very beuatiful and very rich - i think one of the most exotic records ever made, like the aural equivalent of Heironymous Bosch, you can almost smell the perfumes. I have been listening avidly to this record for almost 20 years now, one of the best cosmic jazz records ever made. Not "fusion" either, for me that word conjures up images of awful ego-driven w**koff sessions, but this record is very direct, like The Can, but jazz.

Buy 8 copies of this record immediately if you wish to be transported. But then what would i know? I listen to pop music ;o)

Don Cherry of course has done better than this. 'New age' whispering, and an electric piano with wah-wah that is almost a parody of itself ('fusion' or what?), make for embarrassing listening. It isn't worthy of repeated listenings either, as there are no hidden depths here, no layers of structural complexity, just hippyish self-indulgence.
It's a pity to hear a musician of Cherry's calibre wasting his time on stuff like this. He did have this tendency every so often, but we can be grateful for some brilliant recordings like 'Symphony for improvisers' or 'Relativity suite', or his records with Ornette Coleman.
