Rocket From the Crypt were a San Diego based punk rock'n'roll band who made several albums between their formation in 1989 and their final show in 2005. This album was released around the middle of their career, in 1998. What lifted RTFC above their contemporaries was their infectious mixing of rebel punk attitude and energy with a sound that owed an equal amount to the Stooges and to mid-50s rock'n'roll, largely thanks to their horn section, consisting of Apollo 9 on saxophone and JC2000 on trumpet. So, while Speedo belts out lead vocals over the amazing, high-octane rhythm section of PeteyX on bass and Atom on drums, and Speedo and ND's guitars snarl and crash in unison, the horn section, in conjunction with female backing vocalist, Elaina, lend their sound a strong flavour of early, down and dirty, rock'n'roll flamboyance. The overall effect produces an almost irresistible urge to get up and jump around the room. By all accounts they were an astonishingly good live act and, given the power of these songs belting out of a CD player, I am more than ready to believe it. In short, RTFC ROCK!
Followers of my other reviews will know I'm a huge fan of UK-based, US-influenced punk rock'n'rollers, The Screaming Blue Messiahs. For my money, RTFC are the only US outfit who came close to pumping out as much adrenaline on record as the Messiahs. From the first drum-hit of the opening track, 'Eye on You,' to the final feedback of 'Run Kid Run' this album never lets up. Stand-out track has got to be the magnificently demented 'Dick on a Dog:' "The man cracks down on the brand new moves. The kids don't want it but the folks approve. Don't get even - don't get mad. Just shake it till you're wet and make it get red hot. It's like a dick on a dog." Well worth the price of admission for that alone in my book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kitsch, Funny and highly moshable., 16 Jan 2001

In a world where the music industry is purely dedicated to manufactured dross, it's refreshing to encounter an LP like "RFTC". Catchy tunes like "Eye on You", "Lipstick" and "Run Kid Run" are indications that this band are not musicians, but showmen. The sound can only be described as kitsch-metal, and the result is a record that's absolutely hilarious and great to mosh to. Limp Bizkit should take notes.
