4.0 out of 5 stars Hotter than a match-head, 11 Sept. 2013

This review is from: Have A Little Faith (Audio CD)
Among the irrepressible and lovable Joe Cocker`s later albums, this is one of the best.
It has its moments of MOR water-treading, and not all the songs are off the top shelf, but Joe`s in good voice, is singing with that impassioned soulfulness that is his calling-card, and he`s got a good little band with him in the shape of tasty guitarist Tim Pierce, bassist Bob Feit, succinct drummer Jack Bruno, as well as both C.J. Vanston and Joe`s old mucker Chris Stainton on various keyboards.
Two of the songs are written or co-written by Tony Joe White, including the superb opener Let The Healing Begin, and he joins the band on guitar too.
The title track is one of the great John Hiatt`s most famous songs, and Joe does it full justice, while not bettering the unimprovable original.
I`m indebted to the booklet lyrics for finally telling me what the actual words are to the fine old Lovin` Spoonful hit Summer In The City, a song suited to the Cocker larynx. He sounds in his element on it.

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin` dirty and gritty,
Been down, isn`t it a pity?
Doesn`t seem to be a shadow in the city.
All around people lookin` half dead
Walkin` on the sidewalk hotter than a match-head

The Great Divide, the magnificent Highway Highway by Steve Allen Davis, and Robbie Robertson`s Out Of The Blue are three more reasons to get hold of this recording from 1994. Joe`s never going to sound quite like he did in his sixties/seventies pomp, but this set of thirteen songs, lasting almost an hour, will do just fine for now.

One of the unique Joe Cocker`s best albums of recent years.

This is one of his finest CD's I feel. It is one that escaped me for some time but, I am glad I have found it. His voice is so full of passion and the music, especially some of the saxophone solos are fantastic. One for your collection.
