4.0 out of 5 stars callahan releases the hounds, 19 Mar. 2004
This review is from: Eva Luna (Audio CD)
after the breakup of the excellent wolfhounds (a(nother) band i've discovered in hindsight), mr callahan's first outing with moonshake was a complete surprise.
discordant horns, the best bassist in the world (tm) and beats to kill for. along with this the usual themes of urbanism, domineering/ unassuming fathers and fiedler's tales of sex. 'bleach and salt water' still ranks as one of those bizarre tracks that always sounds quiet no matter how high the volume is, coupled with a dual drum pattern that gets under the skin. 'tar baby' for want of a better word rocks while callahan's lyrical tales of the tawdry cover the darkness of johhny vagrant ('wanderlust') and the aforementioned 'punctual, polite and efficient...obey, but do not understand'. be afraid, etc.
the only issues i have with the album is that, on this version, the tracks are in a different playing order and it sags a bit at the start (whereas before it was near the end). having said that, the extra three tracks are all of the very highest standard ('secondhand clothes' i'd heard before, the others were new to me).
a very good debut then, so by most bamds standards its extraordinary stuff.
