4.0 out of 5 stars Why this album wasn't released in America or the rest of Europe is beyond me!, 18 May 2006

Paul (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Outside In (Audio CD)
I initially only bought this for the track "You Got The Love [Now Voyager Mix]" which is the brilliant EXACT version playing over the final scene of Sex & The City (which was impossible to get before it was released on the single in the UK in February however). Fortunately Amazon is so useful at obtaining imports.

Besides "Young Hearts Run Free" I'd never really heard much of Candi Staton but after having listened to this album I'm pretty impressed. There are some really good tracks on here, it's upbeat and even the slower 'ballads' generally have a quick rhythm to them. Most of the songs have a club feel to them. The best tracks would be the remix of "Young Hearts Run Free", the remix of "You Got The Love" and a song called "Musical Freedom" which sounds as if it's a live performance, although it doesn't say this on the track listing. It's a great song which borrows some of the melody and some lyrics from "You Got The Love" and works really well.

But all in all, while it's a good album to have on in the background and all the songs are at least half-decent, besides the few I've mentioned there's nothing else amazing on here - so probably a buy only for those who are after a specific song as I was or maybe a huuuge fan of Staton?

Since Amazon hasn't provided a track list, here it is :

#1 Love Yourself

#2 Young Hearts Run Free [Danny D Remix]

#3 Love On Love

#4 Outside In

#5 You're Still The Lightning

#6 Whadda You Want?

#7 Bouncing Back

#8 Musical Freedom

#9 Reach

#10 Love Has Come To Stay

#11 Wake Up Everybody

#12 Young Hearts Run Free

#13 You Got The Love [Now Voyager Mix]

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning return, 25 April 2001

This review is from: CANDI STATION - OUTSIDE IN (Audio CD)
Those clever boys at React Records sure knew how to tempt Ms Staton back into the recording studio. Aside from the brilliant tunes, Candi was inspired by the lyrics and it shows in her vocal delivery. Whether a ballad or a dance cut, Candi sings each song with such passion and feeling you can sense her joy at being back doing what she does best. She has such a distinctive vocal style and it is perfectly showcased on this album. The opening track, Love Yourself, is simply gorgeous, a lovely lilting ballad. Love On Love, the album's hit single, is fast becoming one of my all time favourite records featuring some wonderful piano over a brilliant club sound. The self-penned title track itself is a beautiful, haunting song. There are more ballads, more dance tracks and even a couple of her old hits remixed to compliment this stunning album. Candi may have been away from the mainstream music industry for 17 years but if she decides to leave it for another 17 I can wait, if her next album is half as good as this it will be worth it.

Sometimes there are artists who don't quite get the plaudits they deserve, and Candi fits the mould, She has worked with just about everyone and yet is still a star in her own right. This is a good solid album full of good reliable tracks, Can be played anywhere and still shows a real quality feel.

Candi Staton's You Got the Love will be forever remembered as the finale song for Sex and the City. It brings a happy tear to my eye everytime I listen to it. The song really encapsulates the themes of friendship and love from the programme. This album is a must buy for any fans of the show. Many of her songs are great anthems- classics. A fantastic collection of songs!
