5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem of a CD, 26 Sep 2003
This review is from: The Roots Of Reggae (Audio CD)
There are so many reggae compilations on the market that it's difficult to choose one. Fortunately I chose this one, and it is the "one in a million". Great versions and great recordings of some reggae masterpieces.
Who is Susan Cadogan ? You'll never forget when you hear her track on this album. I've never met anyone who doesn't admire it for its unique beauty. Other highlights have to include Barber Saloon, a heavy beat comedy about a Rastafarian trip to the haridressers; Lee Perry's I am a madman can get embarrassingly stick onyour tongue; the utopian, happy feel of Greyhound's Black and White; heavy warped bass on Augustus Pablo's Java. The weakest tracks on the album are probably from Bob Marley.
Buy this album, you won't regret it, and you'll cherish it for a long time, but don't sleep with it under your pillow because you might damage it - then you'll be really angry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Babylon a fall down, 30 Oct 2005
This review is from: The Roots Of Reggae (Audio CD)
For some reason, buying a decent reggae compilation seems to be quite tricky - there are so many average ones that it's difficult to know where to look. Fortunately, this CD (along with volumes 2 and 3) is the pure original item; this is reggae from the dawn of time. The gorgeous, infectious tunes and joyful singing will make any day feel like summer.
The songs in this series are genuine reggae classics from the sixties and seventies (none of your Chaka Demus and Pliers here), and as such, some of them sound a bit scratchy, but the sheer musical talent shines through that, and somehow the scratchiness makes them all the more atmospheric.
If you like what you hear, I'd say get volumes 2 and 3, and if you still want more check out the Trojan Records box sets. Steer clear of any other reggae compilations just in case, these 2 series are tried and tested.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation For a Newcomer to Reggae / Rocksteady, 11 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Roots Of Reggae (Audio CD)
The Roots of Reggae Vol.1 represents a good value for money Cd for anybody wanting to listen to a wide range of Reggae and Rocksteady artists. All 18 tracks are excellent with 4 or 5 being tracks you must own. Hurt so good by Susan Cadogan sung in a such a sexy sultry way - a classic, Augustus Pablo's Java and Linval Thompson's Rock me Dub for me show why Reggae is one of the greatest of all genre's of music. The one critism would be that the tracks good be grouped together better, but the Cd is truly eclectic.

I bought this for next to nothing and was very pleased.
If you like reggae but don't know much about it like me then this will open your ears.
It has some excellent classics from the like of Bob Marley, Ken Boothe, Desmond Dekker, Toots, The Pioneers and Bob And Marcia.
But more importantly for us novices are the other tracks that weren't big hits in our charts.
This cd has turned me onto a fantastic artist called Mikey Dread (your next purchase should be his 'Best Sellers' album) as well as Prince Far I and Lee Perry.
Buy it. You'll be happy you did.

And if it is... then I'm an expert on reggae coz this is all the usual stuff. No surprises. Not even any classics. No reason to buy this. Disappointed.
