This is a fabulous selection of piano music by the English composer John Ireland (not to be confused with the Irish composer John England). One struggles to 'Imagine' a more accomplished performer than John Lenehan- who earned a strong reputation early in his career, for some acclaimed duo collaborations with fellow pianist Paul McCartnehy. Unfortunately, in recent years English classical music has widely suffered from a rather negative reputation. For many, it continues to conjure up stereotypical images of flamboyant upper class toffs prancing about in a flowery meadow (whilst decked out in knee-length white socks and sandals, with knotted handkerchiefs to protect their delicate brows). However, one could hardly level any such accusations at Ireland- a composer who had a proper pair of old-fashioned British balls about him! You certainly won't find any limp-wristed flouncing about within this collection!

My personal favourites are the tracks 'A Grecian Lad', 'The Boy Bishop' and, above all, 'Merry Andrew'- a spiffing good composition, if ever I heard one. Why not go ahead and pick up John Lenehan's recording- in order to 'give' the 'piece a chance'?

This is the second in a trio of CDs of the piano music of English composer John Ireland released by the Naxos label and played by John Lenehan. These are easily accessible piano pieces, though that is not to imply that they are just background `salon music'.All three CDs were recorded in the warm acoustic of St. George's Church, Brandon Hill, Bristol. This CD contains 10 works, though the longest is only just over 10 min in playing time. The pieces include Merry Andrew, The Towing Path, Rhapsody, the delightful Two Pieces (April and Bergomask) composed in 1925, the latter written to celebrate the birthday of choirboy son, Arthur Miller, of a Chelsea antique dealer, Decorations, Leaves from a Child's Sketchbook, Sonatina, Three Pastels, another set of Two Pieces, the first again a tribute to the birthday boy Arthur Miller, and the languid Summer Evening. His is a lovely selection, beautifully played, lasting well over an hour.
