4.0 out of 5 stars Sonny Boy Blow!
Nice to see this one available on cd, and with the extra tracks, although I'm pretty sure all have been available elsewhere. The picture on the original LP cover was always a little irritating, because it showed a picture of Jeff Beck with the Yardbirds. However, although he is not on this recording, he may well have been a band member by the time it was released...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice place to start...
This is a recording of some live shows at the Crawdaddy by Sonny Boy Williamson when he toured England back in 1963 and needed a backing band. Anyway, The Yardbirds soon began to be more than just backing the bluesman, as these recordings show, and even young Clapton gets to do a nice enough solo or two... The sound of these recordings is quite clear and you also get to...

Nice to see this one available on cd, and with the extra tracks, although I'm pretty sure all have been available elsewhere. The picture on the original LP cover was always a little irritating, because it showed a picture of Jeff Beck with the Yardbirds. However, although he is not on this recording, he may well have been a band member by the time it was released!

This is a good record of a Sonny Boy performance, although perhaps not essential. Having said that, he was such a master of his craft that anything by him is worth buying. The Yardbirds give suitably laidback and reverential backing, no doubt listening very hard for when Sonny Boy was going to change chords, because like John Lee Hooker and many others, the 12 bar format was a loose arrangement for him!

There are no blistering Clapton solos, but some nice touches which give an indication of the talent within. The rest of the band also do a very adequate back-up job for the main man (although Sonny Boy does a few numbers on his own, which feature some extraordinary harmonica playing).

Sound quality is good, and if you close your eyes you can almost imagine what it was like to be in the audience - I only wish I had been, as I never got to see Sonny Boy.

Packaging is very good, with excellent sleeve notes, making up a quality souvenir of the early days of British r&b meeting the original bluesmen.

Many years ago I had this album on LP och I really liked what these in age really different persons made. It was both rocking and rolling with the harmonica on top. This time on cd I get many bonus titles and it's good!

The sound of these recordings is quite clear and you also get to witness the enthusiasm of the crowd even though these young Yardbirds sound a bit hesitant at times. Plus, you get a total of sixteen tracks of the concert on this cd, while the original vinyl only gave you nine. Recommended for huge fans of either Sonny or The Yardbirds, or if you'd like to hear some good old blues the way it used to be, this is a splendid place to start because you get to hear a sixties british blues band as well as an old bluesman doing the real thing. It gets three stars though, because although this is good, it is not outstanding in any way.

P.D. You remember the bluesy approach of Robert Plant's vocals and harmonica on Led Zeppelin's "Bring It On Home"? Well, as soon as you hear Sonny Boy mumbling the words to the opening number on this ("Bye Bye Bird"), you'll see where good old Percy picked it up from. I love you, Esther.
