Good, but with reservations.
on 19 January 2012
With due deference to reviewers with far greater musical knowledge than I, I have listened twice to this before passing it on the the friend for whom I bought it, and my impression is of a good, but not outstanding recording.
Microphone placings and balance can make or break a recording, however accomplished the performance, and I feel that here the orchestra, for whatever reason, sometimes sounds "mushy" and over "homogenised" especially in the tuttis. Chopin for me is a hot/cold experience, and here I feel just "cool". Nothing especially wrong with the performances, but nothing which makes me say "wow" like some performances of early romantic music. I hear the Martha has four pianos (in England) and chooses according to the venue. Not so in Canada? This one (or the recording of it - or she) sounds a little heavy, for all her glittering fingering.
Mmm! What a "sit on the fence" review. Sorry folks. :-)
