4.0 out of 5 stars Hip hop the way it should be, 31 Oct. 2002
This review is from: Fresh Mode Ep [Us Import] (Audio CD)
I bought this album with high expectations after having bought Journey to Anywhere...and I was not disappointed. Whilst it admittedly lacks some of the depth and variety of their later release, it is still vibrant and interesting in its own right. In comparison to Journey to Anywhere, this EP can be thought of as a practise run before the real athing, which is much more highly developed...be prepared to recognise some similar musical and lyrical themes, as they retain the best bits for later use. Bear in mind that this is not necessarily a bad thing!
There is none of the posturing or cod-violence that is endemic in much of this type of music on this record; Ugly Duckling instead rely on smooth and unusual samples looped over funky beats, with witty, fun lyrics and some impressive deck work from Young Einstein. He, along with Andy C and Dizzy Dustin, seem to be so genuinely enjoying themselves that every song exudes their infectious enthusiasm.
All in all, I would be surprised if anyone DIDN'T like this record - there's nothing about it to dislike - and the only reason not to buy it is if you've only got enough money for one CD...in which case you should buy Journey To Anywhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why have you not got this?, 4 Nov. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Fresh Mode (Audio CD)
I got this EP well over a year ago after a recommendation from a fellow Jurassic 5 fan and its rarely left my CD player since and i doubt it ever will.
The beats are so smooth and funky and the rhymes fresh and witty, that you can't help but at least bob your head and sing-a-long. Even non hip-hop fans will love it and to top this off you can go out and buy the equally excellent Journey to Anywhere.
If there is any justice in this world these guys will be huge, but it takes the masses to give it a go and check out a hip-hop album on a par with anything from J5, The Roots and A Tribe called Quest

4.0 out of 5 stars Here comes the funky stuff, 19 Sept. 2000

Ugly Ducking have to to do one thing and one thing only - drop some funky beats and rhymes. They are funny, the flow is smooth, the beats are dope and will get yo' head nodding, and your feet flexing....
'Everybody c'mon' has got to be a classic old skool flava'ed summer tune...I love this stuff! This my friends is truely keepin' it real....gangbangers and other pimp-daddies take note.....

5.0 out of 5 stars "Fresher than a moist towelette", 8 Jan. 2005
This review is from: Fresh Mode Ep [Us Import] (Audio CD)
This is how hip hop should be. The debut album from Ugly Duckling is incredibly relaxed, fresh hip hop. The trio rhyme to perfection, and Young Einstein lays down some serious funky beats.
In my opinion it is the best album they have done, with a wide variety of styles, each as fresh as the other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Mode rocks, 17 April 2011
This review is from: Fresh Mode (Audio CD)
This is an absolute cracker of an EP, a perfect intro for anyone wanting to get into UD and their music. Andy and Dizzy seemlessly flow between each other while Einstein's beats are funky, original and catchy. The so called hip hop acts in the charts should be taking notes from these guys on how it should be done. No heirs or graces, just wicked cool straight up funky hip hop music. Nice one guys!

5.0 out of 5 stars but fantastic beats and the usual slick rhyming style, 2 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Fresh Mode (Audio CD)
A different vibe to the majority of their albums.

Extremely chilled out compared to Bang for the buck for example, but fantastic beats and the usual slick rhyming style.

An awesome album and definitely worth a purchase to kick back and cruise/chill to.

Top work UD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Their Best!, 19 Jan. 2005

As with Jurassic 5, the Ugly's put out a short EP before releasing a full length, and as with Jurassic 5, the EP was awesome, and the full-length was pretty average. That sums it up really. This EP is fantastic, but UD have now become tedious, especially when they use full-on party beats. The follow-ups to Fresh Mode have all had more of a big-beat Fatboy Slim commercial vibe going on, and thats not good. Thats dance music for students. Heads should stick with this EP only, as with J5's debut. If you must listen to geeky white boy/s, stick with MC Paul Barman.
