5.0 out of 5 stars Dire Straits Studio And Live Recordings On 2 Discs.
On it's own the one disc collection is a very good introduction to the music of Mark Knofler and Dire Straits.
Lady Writer is not often included in the band's other collections and really stands out, while Love Over Gold, Your Latest Trick and from Local Hero, Wild Theme are all live recordings which maintain their high standards.
My favourite is Sultans Of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not all the best from this band...
This best of collection does contain most of the best known tunes from the supergroup from all their albums, but falls short.
On the plus side, the classics we all know and love such as 'Sultans of Swing', 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Tunnel of Love' are all here in their full-length versions.
However this is where I start subtracting the stars: The one cut from...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mark Knopfler at his best, 12 Nov 2011
Anybody who loves Mark Knopflers Sultans of Swing will love this. The original recorded version is on disc one - but the best is the 13 minute version on disc 2 recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall - fantastic !

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sultans of Swing........................................, 23 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits (Audio CD)
If you listen to any one Straits album or watch their powerhouse performance at the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday concert on video, it is easy to understand why Dire Straits reigned supeme throughout the world in the 80's. Messrs Knopfler, Issley and co remind us that in an age where dance, punk, soul and Kylie Minogue were evident, there was still a place where 'smokestack fretwizardry' was existent. The frantic guitar solo of 'Sultans of Swing' the rythm of 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Tunnel of Love' combined with the apprehensive yet expolsive guitar on 'Private Investigations' are evidence of how for a band that had at one point been severly in the red, 'Love over Gold' had won through. All came to its climax in 'Money for Nothing' - people may say it had or has no artistic merit - but you sure won't as heckfire find one of the finest guitar openings to a song anywhere else. To remind the world of the power of rock is a great achievement, to twist that world around and 'get a blister on your little finger' and be the stuff of legends is greater still. Dire Straits after 20 years are still part of the 'Walk of Life'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most but not all of their best songs on one CD., 18 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits (Audio CD)
Though any true Dire Straits fan would own all their albums due to their hidden treasures, it does no harm to own this CD and have access to most of their major hits on one album. Listen to it and be taken through the history of this tremendously versatile band. Be taken through the changes in style the band conveyed through their songs, from Sultans of Swing that captivated the music world back in the seventies through to the hits from the band's massive hit album Brothers in Arms in the mid eighties to the singles from their final outing, the album On Every Street. I do feel, however, that the single Skateaway should be on this CD as that was also a chart hit for the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful stuff, 26 Oct 2002
This review is from: Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits (Audio CD)
Just a quickie to say wow! Only just getting into Dire Straits and I reckon this album's a pretty good place to start. Sultans of Swing is an all time classic but other tracks of note are:
Tunnel of Love for approximately 10 seconds of the most orgasmic guitar solo in the world
Brothers in Arms is also superb.
For me one of the highpoints was the final track which evoked more powerful emotions than your average pop song (nearly on a par with Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen, Jeff, Buckley, Rufus Wainright) which is without doubt the most beautiful song ever written.) If you like beautiful music then buy this album. (and any one with Hallelujah on it -- Shrek?)
