`Up On The Sun' is the Meat Puppet's third album, originally released in the spring of 1985. I'd rate it as their best, along with its predecessor, `Meat Puppets II'. It's an extension of the same sound, again mixing up punk, bluegrass, folk and country, with a more psychedelic emphasis than before. Curt Kirkwood's guitar sound still has a gloriously desert sun-drenched feel about it, but here it's deeper, lazier almost. While `Meat Puppets II' came across as a soundtrack to wandering about in the Arizona sun, here you're chilling and lying back in the shade. It's an album you'll want to start your day with on a summer morning, with the sun streaming through the curtains. Some of the Pups' all-time best songs are here - `Up On The Sun', `Maiden's Milk' (an instrumental with some hilariously wacked-out whistling from the Pups), `Away', `Swimming Ground' and `Hot Pink' are my personal picks. In fairness, though, every track is a classic.

Like all the Rykodisc reissues of the Meat Puppets SST albums, the cd comes with a detailed insert, featuring notes by Derrick Bostrom, and bonus tracks. Listen, in particular, to the very different demos of `Hot Pink' (two of them!) and the title track. There's also a video clip, an early live version of `Swimming Ground'.

A QUICK GUIDE TO THE SELF STYLED BEST ALBUM EVER
Up On The Sun: a tale of confused identity, youthful cross-dressing, and incest.
Maiden's Milk - a carpenter walking to work on a sunny morning, starts to whistle when he sees a milk van.
Away - a tale of alien abduction.
Animal Kingdom - a day in the life of a lonely pet shop owner in Phoenix.
Hot Pink - a naturist reminisces about a sunbathing session gone horribly wrong.
Swimming Ground - based on a true story, about a local youth who dived into an empty swimming pool. with tragic consequences.
Bucket Head - after a freak natural disaster, a man, a fly, and a bucket are meshed into a nightmarish whole.
Enchanted Porkfist - a magical pig goes coast to coast. with unforseen results.
Seal Whales - a tale of forbidden love.
Two Rivers - perhaps a thumb in the eye to the kingdom of saudi arabia, a land which has...NO rivers.(FACT).
Creator - a young boy gets LEGO for christmas and realises he is in fact Jesus

Well i guess anyone reading this will go "oh look, another person has justclicked on 5 stars because it's ok."
Personally, if it ain't worth 5 i won't give it. This review is honored byorigianlity of 'chill' at it's best.
Sometimes relaxing, sometimes surprising, sometimes happy, sometimes sad.Always Good.
Unfortunetly, im too young to remember, let alone have the chance toremember Up On The Sun's release, but man it still lives with me.Everytime i do my paper round i hum it, everytime im a mile away fromcivilisation, a time for me and me only, this is what i take with me toshare with myself.
Relaxing and different, any album with songs about volcanoes, rivers, marshmallows, 'animal kingdoms' and 'bucket heads' can't be just glancedat.
Anything a guitar, a bass and a drum kit can do, these guys can do itbetter and they really, really nailed it on this album.

this is truley the best album i have herd from this trio, the sheer genius of the lyrics in some songs like (up on the sun and mother american marsh mallow) just knock you back! not even bands such a corrosion of confomity can compete with this band , the continues use of acustic guitars on some songs lightens the mood, so no mater what mood you are in there is a song on this album for you! this is a must buy! if you buy this you will more than likley become addicted to it!
