5.0 out of 5 stars Without doubt, this is the best music you will ever hear!, 28 July 2000

This review is from: Can You Still Feel? (Audio CD)
OK, you probably haven't heard of this guy and you're thinking "If he really is that good everyone would know about him", but that's the sad thing. He IS incredible. Critically aclaimed but nowhere near as commercialy succesful as he should be. This is his second album and like the first one, (Author Unknown) he plays virtualy every instrument on the CD. The tracks are pure power pop Filled with counter melodies, harmonies and hooks. His voice is toneful and powerful and the songs are beautifuly written, arranged and produced. If you like Jellyfish, Owlsey, E.L.O, or the beatles then you're sure to love the Music of Jason Falkner.

Being a huge Jellyfish fan I naturally went on to follow the various connected (ex)band members careers starting with Jason Falkner. With his 2nd album Jason enlisted respected Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and the end result was spectacular. Taking nothing away from his fantastic debut, 'Can you still feel' has an altogether more professional and disciplined sound whilst maintaing the 'power pop' quality. Its a mystery why Jason remains so criminally underrated however I suspect he will always remain in the 'cult artist' bracket which is a shame as he deserves to be heard by a much wider audience. Tracks such as 'Holiday', Author Unknown, Eloquence and Plan are classics however there isnt a duff track to be heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 6 April 2006

There's a parallel universe somewhere, in which Jason Falkner and Owsley and Brendan Benson are superstars and Coldplay are playing in a pub somewhere - supported by Dido. Can You Still Feel is a masterpiece, the sort of album people expected Paul McCartney to make when the Beatles broke up, but which he never quite managed. This may be his best album but Author Unknown, Bliss Descending and Necessity: The Four Track Years are all very fine. See also the tracks he co-wrote on Brendan Benson's first two albums. Of course, Jellyfish's Bellybutton, which features him (though not as a writer), is, of course, one of the best pop records ever made. The one album by his previous band, The Grays (Jon Brion was in it as well), is a lost masterpiece, long deleted. And the man is currently without a record deal!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album from power pop-miracle, 5 Feb 2005
This review is from: Can You Still Feel? (Audio CD)
I really prefer this album to Author Unknown which is usually considered to be better. If you heard Author unknown, thought it was pretty good, and are now wondering whether to buy this or not, than go ahead. I certainly think it's a stronger album. If you found certain tracks annoying on Author unknown like She goes to bed (I skipped it almost every time)than you'll be pleased. There are no such tracks here. It's all just great pop. It isn't flawless but still very much worth listening to over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find, 4 Oct 2004

This review is from: Can You Still Feel? (Audio CD)
Well, I only bought this on-spec after seeing the "People also bought..." link from Brendan Benson - but what a find! As someone who fantasises about creating my own music, I don't know whether to be inspired to try harder, or just give up and sell all my gear. Even setting aside the astonishing fact that Mr Falkner wrote, played and produced everything on this album, it's still quickly become very high up on my all-time favourites list for the well crafted and intelligent songs. It's hard to describe the musical style - hints of Divine Comedy, Cars, Beatles - anyway, don't waste any more time reading this - just buy it.
