Vic Godard's only chart entries were on Indie. He means nothing in the States and it would take a TV commercial to force any of his songs onto the pop charts. In fact his first planned album was put on ice for 5 years!
Is he any good?
Well it depends what you want the music to do and Godard had a great talent for copying the music of the 60s-you don't have to go too far to think you just heard Bruce Channel's Hey baby or some lost Motown gem.
Doing a cover of the Browns' The Three Bells may seem at odds with his own music but then so was Noel Coward's 20th Century Blues earlier.
With nearly 10 CDs of Vic Godard issued in the 90s-a couple of which are compilations-its an indication of an artist who just may be worth exploring.
After all there was more to the 80s than Duran Duran or Frankie Goes To Hollywood
