This review is from: The King of Tango Vol.1: 1927-1930 (Audio CD)
When I bought this CD I felt bit like someone who, accustomed to the power and sophistication of the Chicago blues from Muddy Waters et al, was listening to my first '20s delta blues recordings from Blind Lemon Jefferson and such. In other words, there is great merit here, it is very interesting, but is it is a much simpler form than the style of the '40s Tango which defined what most of us think of as Argentine Tango. For example, the accompaniment is all guitars; no bandaneo, no piano, no violin. Also, the guitars are played rather plucked and piccicato, with none of the elegant sliding of later Tango guitar music. A rather unsophisticated and chunky musical style.

Another review has praised the voice of Gardel very highly. It is good, but I prefer the honeyed lounge lizard presentation of, for example, Francisco Canaro with singers Roldan and Adrian. But then for me, Tango is in-escapably the territory of musical glamour and sensuality, which although this is a lot of good things, it isn't quite that.

It's not hi-fi but that doesn't spoil the enjoyment of listening to how the Tango evolved - as practised by one of its greatest talents; a shame it was cut short in its prime.
