4.0 out of 5 stars Giulini's Brahms: if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well, 4 April 2013

Make your own decision whether a job done well is one done patiently and slowly. Or if it's fair to characterize conducting a symphony as a job. Suffice to say that, if any one of Brahms' foursome was going to respond well to the latterday Giulini style, it's the 'sunny' 2nd Symphony. 18mins for the first movement, when most people take 15. More the reflective view, rather than any sort of go-getter. A good thing he had the Vienna Philharmonic for this trip. The darkness inherent in this piece, the emotions so dramatically realised by Furtwangler in his broadcast recording (EMI), are faintly hinted at in this reading, smudges on the canvas, bad memories swiftly banished by the happy present.

Definitely worth a listen at budget price.

When you have in a single CD Brahms and Giulini together, it's easy to think about the result.
It's one of the best recordings I've heard of the second symphony. Buy with no doubt.
