There are many re-packagings of Kyung Wha Chung's concerto recordings from her youth and made in the 1970's. This is such a re-coupling with the Tchaikovsky from 1970, the Bruch from 1972 and he Saint Saens from 1977. All three share the same characteristics of singing tone quality, a fabulously pure timbre, immaculate tuning, spontaneity and a wonderful sense of the joy of making music.

These features combined made these recordings, and others, by Kyung Wha Chung a bit of a musical gold-mine for Decca who have been re-packaging her considerable achievements ever since - rather like the Ashkenazy discs.

This Tchaikovsky has the ideal partnership with Previn and the LSO, who between them, fitted hand in glove. Like so many of her other recordings it sounds as if the takes were very long, such is the level of musical flow, and this gives the strong illusion of a real performance caught in the act of creation. The final movement has the short cuts that were traditional at the time. Her later recording restored the missing echoing phrases but this first recording is superior in every other respect.

The Bruch is a lovely performance too with many of the lines, such as those of the second movement, achieving a sort of musical ecstasy. The Saint Saens Havanaise is probably one of the most enjoyable performances ever recorded by anyone.

Overall this disc fully lives up to the title of the series - Ovation! I would suggest that it is well worth purchasing before it becomes unavailable. At the very least it is worth considering very seriously in conjunction with other options available within the various re-couplings.
