This review is from: Bach: Six Partitas BWV 825 - BWV 830 (Audio CD)
Though it is some fifteen years old now, Andras Schiff's recording of the keyboard partitas remains one of the best on disc. A world away from the intensity of Glenn Gould, Schiff's Bach is characterised by a graceful and elegant lilt (listen to the Courante of the first partita), a boldness in the ornamentation that is added to the repeats of movements, and the beautiful fluidity with which lines and pauses are given shape. What is remarkable is that Schiff achieves so much expressivity without mannerism, excessive rubato and whilst maintaining absolute textural clarity. More recent recordings - like that of Angela Hewitt (exemplary in its way, but less individual) - have not eclipsed Schiff's achievement.
