This review is from: Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture / Romeo & Juliet / Francesca da Rimini (Audio CD)
A thoroughly recommended release. I'm a very fussy Tchaikovsky listener, the Romeo and Juliet being part of my DNA. Things i look for in a Tchai recording are unhurried tempo and clear rendition of the lower register instruments and especially the woodwind, which I feel are central to his scores. These are all perfectly executed here, especially the quiet moments. The louder stuff leaps from the speakers too- this is a dynamic recording, but not annoyingly so. The disc sounds good for an 80s release with no hiss audible on my Cambridge Audio / Rega system, always a plus with dynamic recordings as you have to raise the volume a little to get the best out of the quiet passages. The Gramophone review calls this a "demontration quality disc", implying a brightness and detail, which it doesn't actually have; this isn't however a criticism, rather I would praise this for its richness and natural balance. On other recordings, eg the excellent Serebrier, the harp is quite loud, not so on this recording where it is a gentle ripple.
