5.0 out of 5 stars The best 5th I've heard, 13 Jan 2012
This review is from: Sibelius: Symphony No.5/Violin Concerto (Audio CD)
This review depends on your priorities. If you are here for the violin concerto then you will find a fine, solid account from Kennedy that has been bettered, but only by small measures. No complaints about the Villa fan: he plays beautifully and expressively, technicaly brilliant and superbly accompanied by Rattle.

If you are here because you love the 5th symphony, then look no further - I have heard nothing that quite gets where Rattle does with the climax/transition from the first to second movement. It lifts my heart every time I hear it and I suspect it will yours too. Just occasionally, you come across a recording of a piece that makes you think "that's what the composer meant" and this is one of those. This is one of those recordings that makes you duplicate a work in your collection.

As for the recording quality, one word, flawless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted 5th, 9 Dec 2008

This is a beautifully crafted account of Sibelius' 5th symphony, performed with masterful control of subtlety and detail, while overall sense of drama biulds up and culminates in majestic climax. CBSO's brass sound is glorious.

Kennedy's deeply felt rendition of the violin concerto is equally impressive, if it lacks extra intensity of Oistrakh or Mullova.

Beautiful & expansive DDD recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy to listen to., 7 Dec 2003
This review is from: Sibelius: Symphony No.5/Violin Concerto (Audio CD)
This is an excellent CD of two invigorating pieces. The Violin Concerto is truly breathtaking, the clarity of Nigel Kennedy's violin technique combined with an excellent sound recording make this CD a joy to listen to. The interpretation as you may expect both these performers is excellent. Likewise the CBSO's playing in the Symphony No.5 is impeccable and this too is served with an excellent recording quality. Buy this version!

I haven't heard this piece for decades - but was nudged to buy it recently. This recording lives up to expectations with the 5th Symphony coming through very powerfully. Highly recommended.

A sensitive recording of some of the most beautiful music ever composed, particularly the last movement of the symphony. Rattle and Kennedy are inspiring.

Having had such a low opinion of Osmo Vanska's readings of both the 5th Symphony and the Violin Concerto (although I accept that Leonidas Kavakos was brilliant in the violin concerto)we have here performances of both works that show how it should be done.

Kennedy and Rattle in the violin concerto are as one. There is an understanding between them, a chemistry that is so rarely heard. I had an old cassette of this which I always loved, and it remains my favourite version of my favourite violin concerto.

And the superlatives carry over to the 5th Symphony where Rattle, in his CBSO days, gives in my opinion the best performance of this symphony ever committed to disc. If only Rattle had stayed like this allowing the music to flow.....unfortunately his interpretations seems to have lost some of the freedom and immediacy in Berlin.

However, let's just revel in this CBSO version which is as near perfection as I'll ever hear.
