5.0 out of 5 stars More Italian fire (and precision), 12 Jun 2002
This review is from: Monteverdi: Eighth Book of Madrigals (Ottavo Libro dei Madrigali), Vol 2 /Concerto Italiano Alessandrini (Audio CD)
Rinaldo Alessandrini - that man of the (early music) moment - has produced an outstanding recording of Moteverdi's two large-scale dramatic works from the eighth book of madrigals. His excellent sense of drama and pace is present as usual, and with an energetic baritone like Roberto Abbondanza as 'Testo' his version of 'Il Combattimento' is thrilling. The 'Guerra' (warlike) sections are taken at breakneck speed, and the slow laments of Clorinda (Elisa Franzetti) are beautifully shaped.
Il Ballo Delle Ingrate, though the piece itself has some weaknesses, almost made me cry - the closing refrain of the 'ingrate women' contains the most succulent dissonances, and is very movingly sung.
Concerto Italiano's players are on top form, and together with the superb singing, make this an extremely exciting and recommendable release.
