5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Bel Canto, 7 Feb 2007
This review is from: Donizetti - Maria di Rudenz (Audio CD)
This is not necessarily Donizetti's finest opera, but it has the best possible case made for it here. It's a grisly and gruesome story with a rather Gothic Germanic plot in which the heroine, Maria, having apparently been stabbed, reappears in the final act shrouded in bandages. She removes them and bleeds to death before the horrified onlookers.

Needless to say, Nelly Miricioiu wrenches every bit of drama from the music, which has a fairly conventional bel canto structure, although the final aria is rather wonderful and magnificently performed. Miricioiu really is on top form here. Bruce Ford is in spiffing voice too, and if the supporting cast are not quite in the same league, they are perfectly reliable. All lavishly presented in the usual Opera Rara fashion. If you feel like something rather gloomy and horrific, with glorious melodies (imagine M R James set to music) this could fit the bill.
