5.0 out of 5 stars SING SMOKEY, 2 Dec. 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Sing Smokey [VINYL] (Vinyl)
This is a big stepping stone for the Temptations from their first album Album of 1964 (Meet The Temptations)which was a mixture of near miss singles except for one big hit "The Way You Do The Things You Do."
In this album the one big hit above returns and is supplemented with some classic Smokey toones from The Miracles. David Ruffin makes his debut here with the classic "My Girl" hit single, "Who`s Loving You," and "It`s Growing" which tend to stand out in the album.
However the true range of the Temptations is shown here as the lead changes from David Ruffin to Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks on some of the other songs which are powerful emotional love songs, which only Smokey could write.
If you are Temptations fan then this is a must for your collection, and if you are new to the Motown sound and the true artistic talent of Smokey Robinson and the incredible talent and style of the Temptations, then this is a must for you too. You will play this many times.

5.0 out of 5 stars As fresh as the day it was made..., 22 Jan. 2004
This review is from: The Temptations Sing Smokey (Audio CD)
This inspired idea coupled the best of Smokey Robinson's writing with the finest vocal harmony group of the time. The end result... a stunningly effective record that is just about as near to perfect as you can get.

Like all standout albums it flows effortlessly from start to finish and, while many of the tracks have gone on to become "classic Motown", every one stands up to regular repeat listening... if you've never heard "Baby, Baby I Need You", "What Love Has Joined Together", "You'll Lose A Precious Love" or "You Beat Me To The Punch" you're in for a treat.

Thirty five years on and it still sounds as fresh as it did when it was one of THE records to own. Superb tunes, clever lyrics, tight harmonies and beautiful vocal arrangements. The Temptations', possibly Motown's, finest hour!

I bought this vinyl album in 1966 and I still love it. Getting on CD allows me to hear it again without the distortion and crackles of 45 years of wear & tear on my vinyl version.
Motown's greatest group singing songs written by their greatest song writer. What more can you ask for?

The Temptations struggled at Motown to discover a comfortable identity until they worked with producer Smokey Robinson then they clicked and went on to become one of the most successful vocal groups of all time.
