5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Jazz album for any music lover, 19 May 2000

This review is from: In A Soulful Mood (Audio CD)
Charlie "Bird" Parker was one of the great musicians of the 20th century. Not only technically brilliant, amazingly inventive and creative, but deeply thoughtful and emotional. I doubt he could play an uninteresting note. Everything about this fantastic jazz album is classy. The tracks on it are very diverse in mood and each one is a classic performance. The sound quality is exceptional considering the performances were all recorded at sessions in the late forties. Even the notes accompanying the CD are full and informative. A sure-fire way to relax and unwind is to spend an hour (well nearly 80 minutes actually) listening to this collection. Add on the fact that it is available at a bargain price and it is impossible to resist. Highly recommended to anyone serious about music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous! What more can I say?, 3 Mar. 2001

The indispensable improvisations of Charlie Parker, and specifically the ones he recorded for Dial, are collected here on this fantastic collection, where rapid-paced bebop plays head-to-head with moving ballads, and the standouts are the crazily titled "Klact-oveeseds-tene" and the incredible "Night In Tunisia" which features a classic a cappela saxophone run from Parker

Some 79 minutes of material that is full of life and Byrds' ingeniousity. Each and every tune here is catchy and drives you into the mood. (Couple of them have two different takes one after the other, still it doesn't get boring!). Value for money here is unbeatable!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Class, 28 Jan. 2002

My dad always used to rant and rave about Charlie Parker who defined what Jazz was for him. Me being a youngster that was growing up with the Funk/Fusion sounds of Grover Washington, Lenny White, Johnny Hammond etc. didn't quite understand his love for the style of Jazz that I initially associated with old men in smoke filled rooms.
Listening to this really opened my eyes a lot to the beauty and majesty of Charlie Parker. I was holidaying in the South of France and everyone adored listening to this wonderful collection of music by the maestro. What more can I say? if you appreciate good Jazz that is both soothing and relaxing then this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Twentieth Century Starts Here, 19 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: In A Soulful Mood (Audio CD)
One critic said that Bird not only changed jazz forever but all kinds of music. I don't know if the sitar pluckers up the Ganges were influenced by him but certainly all western music has been in one way or another.

Whenever I hear Charlie's spontaneous, amazingly creative improvisations I can't help thinking of the European classical composers hunched over their pianos laboriously hammering out another lump of hackneyed, lifeless waffle. Music desperately needed jazz to breathe life back into it and, as soon as a few cultivated ears were ready, for Charlie Parker to liberate it to the highest level imaginable.

Charlie said he wanted to make pure beautiful music the people could enjoy - and he certainly did that. The more you listen the more you hear in it - like all great art it reveals itself to you gradually over time. Unbelievably, it is possible to pick this superb CD up for a penny! Mine cost a massive 4 pence!

The all round musicianship here is top notch but I was particularly struck by Arvin Garrison's excellent guitar playing. An album to be cherished.
