The best Evita of them all!
on 8 October 2011
Despite being condensed onto only one disc this must be the premier choice for anyone coming to Evita for the first time. There has never been a better Eva than Elaine Paige. She soars in this role giving a performance of flinty beauty and steel. You can really believe Eva's struggle and determination and when the end comes it is devastating.
David Essex gives a performance with one eyebrow raised in bemusement but his expressive voice captures Che's cynicism perfectly. It's a shock to remember that it was Joss Ackland who originated the role of Peron on stage. What a marvellous job he does with a difficult and unrewarding role.
Here we get Rice's witty and insightful lyrics and Lloyd Webber's pulsating score. Together they drive the narrative along at a cracking pace. What a pity this was their last musical theatre collaboration (give or take a few bits and pieces since then).
A vivid recording of the perfect rock opera. Highly recommended.
