5.0 out of 5 stars The finest compilation of sleazy rockabilly jazz that exists, 15 Nov. 2005
By
This review is from: Las Vegas Grind Vol.3 (Audio CD)
The preceeding Las Vegas Grind volumes are interesting, but it is the third that has the goods. It seems impossible to imagine grown men making such crazy music, track 3 'Bogatini' is a marvellous heady cocktail of duck calls, Animal (from the muppets) drum interludes, dizzy bass notes and the finest ending to a song ever (let's just say it involves a flush). Track 24 'The Ho Ho Rock & Roll' is the sound of Mr.Magoo stoned in a strip joint. Track 23 'The First Rhapsody fo knives, forks and spoons' appears to be the sound of Herbie Hancock conducting an American school band with amazing results. Then there's the group (if these groups actually existed outside of these recordings) names; The Bikinis, The Sparklers, Ritchie & The Squires. The sort of name that a band on a Happy Days dance-a-thon would sport.
I rate this compilation for many reasons, not all of them strictly artistic, but there is some quite avant-garde stuff here. The artwork although fitting is a little too sleazy (Volume 2 does a better job with a Robert Crumb knock-off) for its own good.
Las Vegas Grind Volume 2 may be an exhibit in the whold debate of whether-or-not humour should exist in music, but here is a collection of unknowns who throw their all into their music and unintentionally produce some of the most outlandish (semi)instrumental that your ears ever heard. Its music that transends its origins and kitsch value to become something more (see also The Sound Gallery compilation). There are a couple of duds (a little dull rather thatn bad) but you expect that with a comp of 30 tracks.
