5.0 out of 5 stars superb collection of songs by neglected composer, 7 Sep 2009
This review is from: La Belle Epoque (Audio CD)
A broad range of songs set to texts of French poets Hugo, Gautier, Verlaine and others by the Venezuelan-born composer Reynaldo Hahn, who was brought to France at the age of 3. I loved them all, particularly the first one, à Chloris with its Bach style piano part, superbly performed by Susan Graham and Roger Vignoles, both at the height of their profession. The close attention of both artists to the union of words and music makes listening to this CD a memorable experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful songs sung beautifully., 4 Mar 2008

This review is from: La Belle Epoque (Audio CD)
This are new artists and composer for me, but I will look out for them again. Susan Graham and Roger Vignoles work together to produce elegantly phrased music, and Susan's clear tone gives a feeling of lightness and clarity to the songs. This is not well known music but it is presented in an approachable and highly enjoyable style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sublime recording and gem of musicality, 13 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I heard A Chloris in a concert BBC Radio 3 and bought this recording as a result. It is often unusual to come across "unknown" music that is any good (as a general rule, at least). These songs by the rarely heard Hahn are just beautiful. Very French in style. Beautifully sung and played. Anyone who loves music should like these songs. I have had the recording about 5 days and have listened thru about 5 times. Heartily recommended. Am at a loss to know why they are not better known. Now aim to explore Hahn's solo piano music and anything he wrote. Don't hesitate to spend the money on this one.
