5.0 out of 5 stars Drifting on the swelling tide..., 8 Sept. 2003
This review is from: For All the Beautiful People (Audio CD)
The fifth fantastic record from Swell carries you away on a wave of dark and strange sound. The band was starting to fragment at this point, with the loss of founder member Sean Kirkpatrick, but David Freel, Monte Vallier and session drummer Rob Ellis stilll create a drifting, angular, quirky music that sounds quite unique. On this album there's greater use of electronics which meld with their distinct acoustic/electric guitar sonics. It does lack the consistency of the first four albums though Swell still leave most contemporaries trailing in their wake. Again, the record flows with its own particular atmosphere; a twilight drift caught deep between undercurrents of melancholy and scrambling joy. Again, David Freel's fractured lyrics hint at loss, frustration and desperate hope: Splinters of perfect, sunlit afternoons, fragments of claustrophobic, crushing nights. The exception to this is the demented skip of "Off in my head", which recounts the tale of a dumb, wasted evening in a fruitless search of fun. This is immediately followed by the soothing despair of the compelling "Something to do"; a tale of a relationship soured and sunk into habit and dependency. "Tonight", the last proper "song", is one of Swell's most powerful: An elegiac, slow burning anthem to hope and joy that builds to a storm of sound. Though not their best record overall, Swell at less than full strength easily wash virtually all others away; theirs is a sonic ocean all their own. Catch the wave...you won't regret it.

What can I say. It starts very well, dips a tiny little bit somewhere in the middle, then finishes very very well. I like this album. If you don't then who cares (no disrespect intended). Go and buy the Pet Shop Boys or something. Very chilled out. Very soothing. Very good.
