4.0 out of 5 stars Paperhouse (Original Score)
If you're a fan of the movie or Hans Zimmer's soundtracks then this should be a must buy.
The music is atmospheric & suits the film. The only downsides being(as mentioned in the other review)that the score seems to be mastered very low in volume &,despite the final track being almost 18 mins long, there are only 5 other tracks on the album.
Still,it seems to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful score, poor album presentation
Long before he spread himself thin, and in a time before the Zimmer sound became the generic standard young Hans scored a little-seen British horror movie. You may never have heard of it, but Paperhouse is one of Zimmer's best scores.

Working with a Fairlight Series III, a Moog 55, a Yamaha DXI, and a TX816 synthesizer Zimmer creates another world of sound and...

Long before he spread himself thin, and in a time before the Zimmer sound became the generic standard young Hans scored a little-seen British horror movie. You may never have heard of it, but Paperhouse is one of Zimmer's best scores.

Working with a Fairlight Series III, a Moog 55, a Yamaha DXI, and a TX816 synthesizer Zimmer creates another world of sound and feeling that perfectly fits the dreamlike feel of the movie. The main theme (which he later reconfigured as the main theme for Broken Arrow (Original Score)) is wonderfully spooky, but the overall tone of the score gives way to sadness and despair. Despite being one of his early works the usual Zimmer touches are there, especially his fondness for operatic quotations (Requiem, Op. 48: Sanctus by Gabriel Faure is blended perfectly into the mix). By the last track, the amazingly-titled 'Me and My Daughter, We Get On Like a House On Fire', the mood is lifted as the score soars into an upbeat tempo when Anna, free from her depression and looking towards a brighter future declares 'It's alright now'. It's sure to lift anyone's mood, but...the track is eighteen minutes long. EIGHTEEN MINUTES!!!

What on Earth was Zimmer thinking when he produced this album? He even puts in sound effects which feel completely out of place. And the volume is just too low. Perhaps back when he was a novice at producing score CDs he figured that sound effects and lengthy suites were the way to go. But in the modern day us score enthusiasts demand a complete and chronological presentation with a superior sound quality. Epic suite tracks are a thing of the past and force me to chop up the flow of the CD for my own preferred playback. It also suffers from some bad mixing and overall the volume is very quiet. It needs to be louder!

I do wish Zimmer would re-visit this 22-year-old CD with a new presentation with liner notes, no sound effects, a clearer volume and better arrangement. But...I doubt it will happen.
