5.0 out of 5 stars A delight, 5 Aug 2000

This review is from: Can We Go Home Now (Audio CD)
Recorded following the death of their father from Alzheimer's disease, this Roches album contains some deeply touching songs. Even so, this is a warm, pleasurable album, and the Roches never lose sight of their witty urban observations. A delight.

This review is from: Can We Go Home Now (Audio CD)
The three sisters Maggie, Terre & Suzzy have been singing together for a long time now, never becoming very famous (at least not here in the UK) or winning awards, but consistently putting out their likeably quirky, beautifully sung and recorded records every few years. This one was released following the death of their father, and there is an appropriately downbeat feeling to most of the songs.
A friend of mine, on his car CD player, first introduced me to the long title track of this 1995 album, the song being an inventory of sorts, and quite hypnotic in its effect. I`d known about and liked The Roches for ages, but never got round to buying one of their records, an oversight I`m gradually remedying.
Their tangy harmonies are as potent as ever, and songwriting duties are as equally distributed as who sings lead vocal.
There`s a touching song called Home Away From Home, about someone from a fractious family background (the Roches` own?) befriending a neighbour whose husband abuses her. They rescue a wounded bird...
The closing song is a droll song by Maggie all about My Winter Coat, which could almost have been written by Suzzy`s ex, Loudon Wainwright, a master of this kind of non sequitor song. It ends the album on a wonderfully warm note.
Everything is played and sung with precision and care, but I can`t help missing a certain zany abandon I remember from their earlier albums. There again, why should all their records sound the same? This one is not for any and all moods. It`s mostly a pensive, deeply felt set of songs from a trio of mature, musically versatile women, about their lives, loves and longings.
If you already admire and appreciate these three close-harmony sisters, you will want this rewarding disc, and if you`re new to the distinctive musical world of the Roches, this isn`t a bad place to start.
Love the cover - six boots in a semi-circle on a wet New York street, each pair slightly different from the other...
