5.0 out of 5 stars TREASURE THIS - utterly mad genius+ FUN, 27 Sep 2009
This review is from: Frenzy (Audio CD)
the glory of larger than life musical performers -

Screamin'Jay Hawkins (Jalacy Hawkins 1929-2000) could seriously considered one of the world's most entertaining performers to ever tread the boards . his original song "i put a spell on you" from 1956 included here, later covered by Nina Simone and a myriad others is a great first track to introduce the listener to the wonders of Screamin Jay's utterly wonderful barking mad + hugely entertaiing take on 50's r+b, blues and popular song. fans of Capt. Beefheart, need to hear this man - for a clear idea of where Beefheart, Arthur Brown and many later musicians later "appropriated" many of Jalacy's original traits -
such as his outrageous stage dress, skulls as stage props + settg himself on fire - like you do... BUT also his tremendous tenor shouting/singing style and irreverent adaption of rythymn+blues tunes into a kind of cross-roads where Ray Charles meets Beefheart meets ALice Cooper (!) possibly...

Note- "Frenzy" the Edsel issue here only features original recordings not one of thje many later and inferior re-recordings and re-issues to be found. THIS is an essential cd for fans of the highly original and entertaining. there are too many musical highlights to cover - just buy especially if you need a lift to your week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Screaming'? - you bet., 9 Mar 2010
This review is from: Frenzy (Audio CD)
If you only ever get one Screamin' Jay Hawkins album, this is THE one to get. First heard this back in the mid-eighties. I'd never even heard of Screamin' when I got my first listen to this album.
From the opening track ("I put a spell on you"), your first impression is "this is a strange song". They just get get stranger and stranger, and more compelling and surprising.
The man put everything into these songs, but God alone knows what drove him. A real personality. Simon Cowell - this man would have had you for breakfast - literally.
