5.0 out of 5 stars AN UNDISCOVERED GEM - NEARLY 40 YEARS LATER
I have never understood why practically no one has ever hailed Nexus as Argent's best album. Everyone raves about Circus, and yes this too is an excellent album, as too is another critically acclaimed release; the band's live outing Encore.

What many of these folk forget is that not only was Nexus the last studio album by the line up that featured Russ Ballard,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent in places, too dull in others.
Although following their usual format of melodic rock with the sudden unexpected change in volume, tempo and direction, Argent never fail to please. "Love"(Tk 4) is mesmerising rock at it's best and of course the better known "Man For All Seasons" makes good listening. Why then do I give it only 3 stars? Well, how can any piece brilliant music ever compare the incredibly incredible "CIRCUS" album. In my opinion(and that of many)one of the GREATEST albums EVER!!!!!c

5.0 out of 5 stars AN UNDISCOVERED GEM - NEARLY 40 YEARS LATER, 14 Oct. 2010

I have never understood why practically no one has ever hailed Nexus as Argent's best album. Everyone raves about Circus, and yes this too is an excellent album, as too is another critically acclaimed release; the band's live outing Encore.

What many of these folk forget is that not only was Nexus the last studio album by the line up that featured Russ Ballard, but also Encore was recorded on the tour that promoted Nexus, and indeed includes more than 50% of the tracks from the original album; because of course the opening track on Encore is actually 3 tracks from Nexus all linked as one piece.

The opening three tracks on Nexus (all written by Rod Argent/Chris White) form a superb 9 minute mini concept suite, based on the (then) recently sighted comet Kohoutek (first sighted on 7/3/73 by Czech astronomer Lubos Kohoutek - hence the name). This opening is the at least the equal of anything offered by contemporaries such as ELP or Yes.

Argent and White also composed Music From The Spheres, an 8 minute plus epic and Keeper Of The Flame (another 6 minutes to savour), alongside Russ Ballard's own 4 outstanding tracks; Love, Thunder & Lightning, Man For All Reasons and Gonna Meet My Maker, all quite different, but all superb. I seriously cannot fault this album and, as I've already said, I simply can't understand why it is more often than not over looked - take the critical review DVD from a few years back - Nexus wasn't even mentioned!!

If you are a fan of quality 70s rock or prog you could do a lot worse than invest in Nexus - the forgotten gem in the Argent catalogue.

Listening to Nexus many years after first hearing and greatly appreciating their fine blend of musicianship and songwriting, reminded me that this is one of Argent's best albums. Here's hoping that a new generation of younger listeners get to appreciate this high quality music without being distracted by pejorative labels such as Prog Rock that condemned albums like this to a form of oblivion when Punk Rock came along. Good music is good music in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star stuff, 27 Dec. 2000

CIRCUS is a great album and I would like to own it on CD ( where is it )but NEXUS just has to be a five star recording. Possibly a bit difficult to get your head around the first couple of listenings but I wouldn't like to do without anymore.

First heard back in the seventies, I thought I'd give it another appraisal. Not as good as I thought, but still a couple of memorable tracks, the highlight being, 'Music from the Spheres'.
