5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate SLADE!!!, 13 Nov. 2000

Get Down And Get With It, was the first of an amazing seventeen UK Top 20 hit singles for 70's super group, SLADE. Wall Of Hits has them all! If you were too young then, buy this now - because Slade's Wall Of Hits is an astonishing achievement. The first band to enter the UK charts at No.1 since the Beatles, Slade went on to repeat the process another two times, just to be sure. Under the guidance of former Animals bassist, Chas Chandler (manager/producer) Slade gave the people wot the peeple wonted - bad spelling and all!
A fun band, a party band, and a class live act; no one could slay Slade. They were a group of their time without a doubt, and songs such as Cum On Feel The Noize, Far Far Away, Gudbuy T'Jane, and all the others still sound just as fresh today as they did then. This is a great album from an amazing era - and if for some reason you don't like it - just give it to your parents, 'coz they'll love it! Take Me bak 'ome, indeed! 5 stars. KJ

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener for those who only know Slade as rockers, 13 July 2008

The above review says it all about the classic good time songs that Slade produced. However, such thoughtful songs as "Everyday", "How Does It Feel", "My Oh My" and "Far Far Away" show what a versatile band they really were. Even the early "Coz I Luv You" gave an indication of a surprisingly sensitive side to some of their songwriting.

If you only know "Merry Xmas Everybody" (and we all know that one!) give yourself a treat and listen to this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far more than just that Christmas song, 23 Dec. 2013

Slade were a fine band, as this compilation demonstrates. They had a long string of big time hits in the 1970's and 1980's including six number one singles (all of which are included on this CD). There's barely a duff track among the 20 tracks on this album and most of them are excellent.

The band members' fashion sense may have been non existent but their musical abilities were superb. There are the rockers 'Coz I Luv you', 'Cum On Feel the Noize' and 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now' among others, but then there are also more meaningful tracks such as 'My Oh My', 'How Does It Feel' and 'Everyday' that lay bare the myth that Slade just churned out catchy pop tunes.

Oh and the iconic 'Merry Xmas Everybody' is here as well, it could hardly have been omitted.

I could list my favourite songs from this CD but that would involve me listing the majority of the tracks. In my view this is one of the best 'Greatest hits' compilations ever which shows how good Slade really were.

5.0 out of 5 stars WALL OF HITS SLADE, 31 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wall Of Hits (Audio CD)
Slade is an English rock band from Wolverhampton/Walsall. They rose to prominence during the glam rock era of the early 1970s with 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones. The British Hit Singles & Albums names them as the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles. They were the first act to achieve three singles enter at number one; all six of the band's chart-toppers were penned by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. Total UK sales stand at 6,520,171, and their best selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody", has sold in excess of one million copies.[1]

Following an unsuccessful move to the United States in 1975, Slade's popularity waned but was unexpectedly revived in 1980 when they were last minute replacements for Ozzy Osbourne at the Reading Rock Festival. The band later acknowledged this to have been one of the highlights of their career. The original line up split in 1992 but the band reformed the following year as Slade II. The band has continued, with a number of line-up changes, to the present day. They have now shortened the group name back to Slade.

A number of diverse artists have cited Slade as an influence, including grunge icons Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins, punk pioneers the Ramones, Sex Pistols, the Undertones, the Runaways and the Clash, glam metal bands Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Poison and Def Leppard and pop-rock stalwarts the Replacements, Cheap Trick and Oasis.[2]

The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Music tells of Holder's powerful vocals, guitarist Dave Hill's equally arresting dress sense and the deliberate misspelling of their song titles for which they became well known.[3]

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Introduction to The Band's Breadth and Depth of Their Music, 16 Aug. 2014
By
This review is from: Wall Of Hits (Audio CD)
Slade's Wall of Hits does exactly what is say on the tin; it provides good grounding of Slade's music catalogue from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. Whilst there are more then one greatest hits albums for the band: their excellent 'Feel the Noize’ greatest hits album from 1999; and their ‘Very Best of Slade’ compilation from 2006 being just two for them. Wall of Hits now needs to be compared with these other greatest hits albums, finding out whether this one provides a fine impression for one of Britain’s most successful glam rock groups.

The fact that they have all the classics tracks on them, as you would expect (Coz I Love You, “Cum On Feel the Noize,” How Does it Feel, Merry Xmas Everybody) it is really the lesser-known tracks that make Wall of Hits somewhat inferior to the later greatest hits albums. Whilst Universe deserves as much exposure as Radio Wall of Sound (certainly a lot more love too!) it is Thanks for the Memory (Wham Bam Thank You Mam) and Let's Call it Quits that dampen the variety of soft and heavy rock with its fun blue-infused musical mixture, in the same vein as the charmingly catchy Bangin' Man. The fact that this album edits the emotionally brilliant Coz I Love You, but no edit on the lovely My Oh My, just shows how pedantic fans of their music may get into, if they are unfortunate to have any of their other greatest hits albums.

So whilst it does not provide the best of their minor hits (no love for "In for the Penny", Lock Up Your Daughters, or All Join Hands on this one!) it is still a solid introduction to their band's breadth and depth of their music, and will satisfy the newcomer to their work. For those expecting a bit more may want to check out another greatest hits album for some additional hit singles before plunging into their albums; but Wall of Hits will still have a place, probably for debate, for anyone that is trying to get into these legendary glam rockers.

Grew up with Slade. I remember listening to the top 10 countdown in
the school playground, when Slade regularly jumped straight to No. 1.
Anyone who remembers those days will love this compilation. All the greats,
including their Christmas wonder hit. Whether young or old, buy this and
listen to Noddy's amazing voice. Can't go wrong at this price.
