4.0 out of 5 stars Songs from Llibre Vermell and earlier, 14 Nov. 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Black Madonna (Audio CD)
Unicorn have made several excellent recordings of medieval and renaissance music for Naxos. This one features Belinda Sykes and countertenor Bernhard Landauer singing songs mainly connected with the iconic Black Madonna of Monserrat backed by recorders and percussion. This release (like Unicorn's 'Troubadors' and 'Codex Faenza' CDs, but unlike the 'On the Way to Bethlehem' and 'Alfonso el Sabio' CDs) includes full texts and translations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bursting with Magical Life and Earthy Joy!, 16 Feb. 2007
This review is from: The Black Madonna (Audio CD)
What a shock that this CD only costs £4.99. It is easily my favourite medieval CD, and recalls everything from the still beauty of an early Madonna to the mad chaos of Breugel and Bosch. This CD is not some esoteric dip into European medieval culture: it is a thrilling experience! The musicians bring the past to visceral, thriving throbbing life. Belinda Sykes has a voice like nothing I have ever heard -- there is earth and grit and a vibrant transcendent beauty at play in this woman's vocal cords. You have to hear it to believe it! And the musicians in this ensemble make the ages ROCK! This is not a tame recording. It will leap out at you. It will make you want to dance, pray, sing, and get your bare feet covered in holy earth on a pilgrim's path. Enjoy!!!

This disc does not just play you ancient music, it is so evocative that you are translated to the emotions of a previous age. It is rather like Chaucer: not just piety (though there are some deeply religious moments), but humour, celebration and drama as well

This music is earthy, like folk music. Not sure of its musical merit but certainly evocative
