4.0 out of 5 stars Great songs, shame about the production
'Rev it Up' is yet another strong album from Vixen - the super-talented all-girl band who were perhaps the only female outfit to commercially break into the world of hard rock and metal in the late 80's. The first seven or so songs on the album are excellent - catchy rock tunes that make for fun, easy listening. The real stand-out song of the album is the megaballad 'How...

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheesey 80's hair metal by girls
Brings back a few memories!
It may not be the most technically or musically brilliant album ever but its fun.

The real stand-out song of the album is the megaballad 'How Much Love' which shows how talented the members of the band were, although like 'Love is a Killer' the over-production and occasional use of keyboards and synthesizers makes it a bit over-the-top (the band's live performances of them were better).

However, once you get to 'Fallen Hero' it all kind of falls apart - the use of keyboards and synthesizers returns and has a disastrous effect - spoiling the potentially good 'Fallen hero'. Even worse is the stinker 'Heartbeat Away' whose bubblegum-pop production makes it sound like something Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan might sing. 'It Wouldn't Be love' is a bland, mainstream flop written by millionaire song-writing bore Diane Warren. The album somewhat redeems itself at the end with the punky rocker 'Wreckin' Ball', however the preceding three songs leave a bad taste that spoils an otherwise impressive, deeply enjoyable rock album.

Nothing wrong with the musical skills of these girls, good solid heavy rock. But the producer of this album needs a chillpill. The album is overproduced with way too much synthezisers

4.0 out of 5 stars Vixen -- Fox Rox, 29 Feb 2012
This review is from: Rev It Up! (Audio CD)
I bought this album for 1 particular track 'Love is a Killer' but found the rest of the tracks equally entertaining. There are not many girl rock groups with a strong sound and gutsy vocals (in the style of Bonnie Tyler) and these girls fit the bill. If you like musical rock you'll love this.
