4.0 out of 5 stars ''Romance 1600 - Sheila E'' CD., 16 Dec. 2011

This review is from: Romance 1600 (Audio CD)
I had high hopes for Sheila E's 2nd Prince produced album, after the brilliance of her debut 'Glamourous Life'. I wasn't let down, even if it didn't always live up to the high standards of her first record. It plays more as a slightly less memorable imitation of that first album.

It kicks off with a funky pop song ''Sister Fate'' which is an excellent opener and has a catchy hook and quirky lyrics you come to expect from the 1980's minneapollis gang.
Then it's onto one of the best songs on the album, the melodic, dreamy pop of ''Dear Michaelangalo'' where Sheila shows off her silky vocals over a typical Prince style ballad.
The centre-piece of the album is 'Love Bizarre' which features Prince singing alongside Sheila throughout. It runs in at almost 11 minutes, and is a light, frothy dance song. It's a considerable departure from the funkier style of 'Glamourous Life', and ties in with the psychadelic tone of Prince's ''Around the World' album.
The only other song worth mention is the title track, which again is a frenetic dance pop song that is a real stand out.
The rest of the tracks aren't as memorable, and do come across as filler songs. Good standard filler songs, but filler songs nonetheless.

If you want an introduction to Sheila E's music, check out 'Glamourous Life' first, but this follow up record is a good companion piece to that album.
