This collection undoubtedly offers the best coverage of REM up to 1987. It contains all their best songs of the period (although there are many more classics on the albums) such as The One I Love, Radio Free Europe, Pretty Persuasion and the gorgeous Cuyahoga. This offers much better value for money than the decidedly patchy coveraqge offered by Eponymous. So go and buy this today to hear some of the best (and freshest) music that REM have recorded.

Chances are you won't know most of the songs on this album, if, like me, you first heard of REM around the Green/Out of Time years. In fact, the only ones I'd heard of were The One I Love and It's The End Of The World As We Know It. If you're the same, don't let that put you off though as this album is full of incredibly beautiful songs that will introduce a whole new side to the band.
I wasn't too keen on this album at first, but soon the tunes started to grow on me, and now this CD rarely leaves my stereo. From the early mumblings of Radio Free Europe and Perfect Circle to the truely amazing Fall On Me and Cuyahoga, it's impossible not to fall in love with this collection.
It's a shame that recently the band have lost their way, so instead of buying Reveal or Around The World, invest in this and some of their earlier albums (especially Murmur) as you won't be disappointed.

This album is full of REM's lesser known songs. This doesn't mean that they're no good though. From the minute you turn on the ablum, the sound is amazing. Perfect Circle is one of the most beautiful and moving songs I've heard, with an absolutly gorgoues chorus. Talk About The Passion is one of those songs you can listen to, and just listen. (Don't go Back to) Rockville is a groovy summer song, and is really uplifting. Fall on Me is another beautiful track, as is Cuyahoga. The album ends in one of my favourite It's The End Of The World (And I Feel Fine) and is maybe a reminder to everyone out there in the world, who are always in danger. This album is a must-buy, and will lighten up your day.

ah the days when REM were an up and coming secret. There are some great songs on here, so much better than the stuff they do now. This album contains all the songs from just before the absolute golden era of REM (Orange, Out Of Time, Automatic For the People). The early signs of their creative genius are here in songs like Perfect Circle, The One I Love, Fall On Me and Finest Worksong.
You probably won't have heard of many of the tracks but I can assure you they are excellent.

This is a fantastic collection of singles and LP tracks. REM were one of the bands who soundtracked the 80's for people into "indie/alternative" and tracks like like Radio Free Europe, So. Central Rain, Rockville, Fall on Me etc are genuine classics. A definite 5 star LP.

There is no filler on either of R.E.M.'s first five albums, plus the fantastic EP Chronic Town. Buy all of those, this is NOT a Greatest Hits combo

Bought for myself, great album and it was of good quality when arrived, unscratched and all songs work perfectly. Many thanks.

REM's early albums for me outshine the latter ones and this best of is a great starting point, no fillers to be found!

My first close look at R.E.M. and I felt a little disappointed.
Purely personal view of course.
