5.0 out of 5 stars Melons with Foul Goats, 26 Feb 2002

This review is from: Sylvie and Babs (Audio CD)
This is one of the funniest and most enduring NWW albums. Fashioned primarily from rewrites and sound culls from easy listening records (and his own archive), Steven Stapleton and the vast credited cast (over 40 names on the sleeve!) produced a priceless collage, rich in surreal humour and absurd high spirits. Predating the fad for such musics by some 15 years, "Sylvie & Babs" succeeds where almost everybody else failed, bringing a new sense of purpose to these wilfully antiquated sounds. An evergreen flipside to, say, "Spiral Insana"'s more severe tone, this album proves that, in his most productive period to date, SS had as much wish to entertain as he did to challange and, as ever, he absolutely enthralled and, prior to this re-issue, this was one of the most sought after releases by the group. Laugh out loud, listen in wonder at the peculiar landscape and resolve to be adding yet more NWW to your collection at your earliest convenience.

Nurse With Wound have never been po-faced about their avant-garde experimentalism, as one should expect from their often Dada version of musique concrete, and they're as capable of doing scary as they are funny. Here though it is most definitely funny- an incredible sound collage of clips from a preceding era of more innocent entertainments, albeit with room for the odd bit of drilling too! This is testament to Steven Stapleton's skills as a bricoleur- the collector who can collate in ways that create. From his inspired juxtapositions comes a thing of demented beauty. Another essential addition to the wonderful world of Nurse With Wound. The studio really is the instrument.
