4.0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for the ultimate Greatest Hits album - this is not for you., 6 July 2007
By
This review is from: Masterpieces (Audio CD)
Masterpieces was originally released as a 3-album set in March 1978 in Japan and later that year in Australia and New Zealand, in conjunction with Dylan's 1978 Far East Tour. In 1987 a cut down 2-disc version was released in Australia, which omitted Idiot Wind, I Want You, Song To Woody and Love Minus Zero/No Limit. This is the later 1991, 3-CD Australian version, restoring the removed songs.

The woefully inadequate sleeve notes don't contain the essential background information needed to differentiate this compilation from the many "Greatest Hits" CD's currently available. In fact, the version of Like A Rolling Stone is taken from the Isle of Wight Festival, as is The Mighty Quinn. Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? - is taken from a 1965 single and Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues was the B side of the I Want You single, taken from a live recording at Liverpool 1966. Other obscurities include George Jackson (Big Band Version), the Desire era B-side Rita May and Spanish is the Loving Tongue taken from the flip side of the Watching the River Flow single.

If you are looking for the ultimate Greatest Hits album - this is not for you.

God knows I must have some of these tracks umpteen times over, however, 'Masterpieces' gets a thumbs-up from me simply because of the presence of a few otherwise unobtainable, or at least scarce jewels located within. The live versions (from the Isle of Wight, 1970), of 'Like A Rolling Stone' and 'Mighty Quinn' are great, and the 'Big Band' version of the single 'George Jackson' likewise is a rarity. Aside from those tracks, you can't argue with the track selections - like another reviewer says, it was an Aussie / Japanese release at the time (late 70's) to coincide with a Far East tour. I've always liked the Bobster's 'Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window', and 'Mixed Up Confusion' - all good stuff, but, if you can afford it, worth owning, but not if you're looking for a more all-encompassing Dylan comp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dylan compilation, 19 Nov. 2010

"Masterpieces" is an excellent three CD retrospective of Bob Dylan's music up until 1976.

This item is no longer in print and is somewhat of a rarity.
