this isn't toe tapping..It's foot stomping !
Kickin' off with the splendid "Diddy wah diddy" the raw blues accompanied by the beefheart growl must be played to ALL the neighbours at once whether they would like to hear it or not.
My only gripe being the CD is far too short at a mere 12 minutes ....

The Captain's first recordings show the R'n'B origins of the Magic Band, and showcase their already able talents. A brilliant cover of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' and the Captain's amazing voice and harmonica on 'Frying Pan' are gems entirely unlike later work, though just as good. Raw, and very danceable blues.

Beefhearts label hopping still comes back to haunt him with much inconsistency in the packaging and value for money front and in two cases some missing work. Lick my Decal's off baby is only available in this country as a down load and the original Bat Chain Puller album has never been released.

Of course these recordings are the beginning of all that and very good they are too soundwise and style wise. Many of us wish Don Van Vliet had just done a little more straight R&B before veering off into avant garde territory. Like Dylan before him he would have had a better opportunity to subvert music if he'd been a bit more popular.

The package is just six songs. No one really to blame but it's a shame there isn't any out takes of alternate mixes or live stuff or just something else. Listening to this is leaves you a little disappointed and wanting more. If the Beefheart of Safe as Milk is your thing though this will be right up your alley.

I don't care if this doesn't last very long cus I wud rather play it 20 times on the spin than listen 2 certain other music. how gr8 it is takes sum explaining unless you are already a magic band fan .I very much doubt wether there is a fan who hasn't got this. but if u are new 2 them then this will start you off on an adventure into music that u will wonder time & time again "why didn't I discover this years ago" better late than never tho eh??!!

It's the Captain so can't be other than enjoyable even taking his quirkiness into account.
