5.0 out of 5 stars Pure brilliance!, 24 Jun 2001

A. Russell (Derby, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: To See the Lights (Audio CD)
It is no exaggeration to say that this collection of rarities, b-sides and live tracks is in a different league to any other indie albums released in the 90's. Martin's voice range throughout this album is simply marvellous, from the ballads 'I Can't Help Myself' and 'Her Fifteen Years' to the upbeat live version of 'Sleep Well Tonight' not forgetting the classic 'Olympian' which ebbs and flows to probably the greatest chorus (and longest) that I have ever heard. A guage of a song writers talent can be found in artists/bands b-sides and it is clear that Martin Rossiter and the rest of Gene are a class apart from the majority of 'Indie' bands around today. With a hidden track at the end, albeit another version of 'For The Dead' this collection of tracks represents what was so good about the Britpop revolution. Quite simply this album is pure class. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gene at their Greatest, 23 Feb 2001
This review is from: To See the Lights (Audio CD)
To see the lights is a brilliant album, containing all the stuff you loved from Olympian and loads of other cool bits in one perfect package.
Sadly for most fans of their earlier work its also marks the beginning of the end, when the band decided to leave the bedsit to go rock, (with dispointing results!)
However, the ablum remains a classic with stoming live renditions of old standards like 'olympian' and 'london, can you wait' as well as some great covers including one of the best versions of 'say a little prayer' ever to grace your stereo - its only a shame that for so many of us it had to end here!
