5.0 out of 5 stars ENCHANTING score, RUBBISH packaging
Bernard Herrmann is a brilliant composer. This album contains haunting but also enchanting music. maybe you can still like the music even though you don't like the movie. But the packaging is another thing. the cover is not the same with the one that showed on this page. rubbish, it's not a movie poster, no writings. just a photo of de niro holding a gun, and it's not...

Being a student of composing for film and tv, I was looking forward to hearing Bernard Herrmann's unadulterated, original music for the great film Taxi Driver. Unfortunately the original release on CD from Arista consists of 10 tracks, the first 5 of which are pointless jazz funk workouts of Hermann's themes by session musos, arranged by Dave Blume. Track 6 is a collage of Travis Bickle soundbites over a pasted together backing track. It's not until you get to track 7 that the original music is heard, conducted by Herrmann. This is the real thing - exquisitely composed and orchestrated, this is film music of the highest calibre, but the total minutes of this actual soundtrack material add up to 9.55! Do yourself a favour and make sure you buy this product brand new. It's only the newer version which has the track listing illustrated on this product page.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most memorable soundtracks ever, 1 Nov 2010
This review is from: Taxi Driver (Audio CD)
This last masterpiece from the master of Hitchcock's film musics is a must-have. Since the very beginning of the movie Taxi Driver, it makes it way inside your brain and keeps stuck into it forever. Buy it if you saw the movie once, memories will surface.

4.0 out of 5 stars great music but poor package, 5 April 2011
This review is from: Taxi Driver (Audio CD)
The music and remastering are both great.
However, the CD package you get is rubbish.
The insert is a single sheet with a couple of colour photos and no information.
It's what you'd expect for a bargain bin reissue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 6 April 2007

Great music which stands up beautifully without the movie. Listening makes you realise how much of the power of the film comes from this score. The sonics of the CD are far superior to the sound of the score on DVD. There are all kinds of details which jump out that I never noticed in my many viewings of the film.

Just ignore the jazz funk stuff which follows the OST.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taxi Driver soundtrack cheapened by David Blume's interpretations, 13 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Taxi Driver (Audio CD)
I would have awarded the original soundtrack cd five stars if only it was indeed that - the original soundtrack. So why on earth did David Blume see fit to add funk to his interpretation of Bernard Hermann's masterpiece? Has he not seen the film? Was he instructed to add filler to the album? Wasn't he aware that Taxi Driver is not a black exploitation film? Only he can answer those questions.

The best thing about this release from Arista is that the all too brief tracks taken from the film are very good, and the sound quality I found to be excellent.

However, as a previous reviewer has pointed out, the cover picture is not the same as the one pictured on Amazon. For me, that in itself is not a problem, but the single page reverse has notes that are indecipherable as the words have been condensed far too much.

A proper professional soundtrack release would have none of the caveats mentioned above. All that buyers want is Bernard Hermann's original score - is that too much to ask record companies?

Bought this for my husband who is a jazz fan and loved this film for the music tracks, needless to say he is absolutely thrilled with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks around., 22 May 2014

Wonderful soundtrack to one of my favourite films. The music is haunting, dark, moody, sleazy and brings to life the decadence and decay of the streets prowled by the films disturbed protagonist. If you enjoy film soundtracks and you do not own this you are missing out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album based on a theme, 4 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Taxi Driver (Audio CD)
I bought this because I'd heard the music used as incidental music on an arts programme. I tracked it down and found out it was from the soundtrack to Taxi Driver. As with most soundtrack albums it's based on several slightly different treatments to that same theme so not really an album to sit and listen to in its entirety as an album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, 12 Feb 2002
This review is from: Taxi Driver (Audio CD)
The great Bernard Hermann in one of his latest works hits completely the spot giving the perfect mood for the taxi nights, that dreamy feeling that the main character is going thorough. A pleasure to listen, but make sure to listen to it carefully.
