4.0 out of 5 stars For the dedicated fan!, 7 July 2004
This review is from: The First Session CD (Audio CD)
I love this album, but 3 of the 4 songs can be found on My Body the Handgrenade, with many more. This album is for the hole obsessive or completist, or like me, the hole obsessive completist who wants to hear the fabled johnny's in the bathroom. Its worth it, the song is crazy, weird, disturbing with a chorus of children singing the hymn Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, Courtney babbling about being a star, and haunting guitar noises in the background.
The other songs are excellent, Retard Girl is an anthem for anyone who has ever been picked on in any way. 'Retard poke her, with a stick', Courtney snarls above a thumping bass line. And you know she means it. The Phonebill song is a fast, abrasive piece of punk rock, with Courtney howling above it. Turpentine, hole's first recorded song, is another piece of punk rock, with brilliant lyrics, reminiscent of the record Pretty on the inside, (as it would be, hole recorded Pretty on the inside a couple of years later with no noticable change of sound.)
In conclusion, this album is probably not worth the money unless you already love POTI era hole, or if you are a completist. It is a brilliant ep, but what else would you expect from Courtney and Eric?

5.0 out of 5 stars Ill take you down to the roots., 6 Aug 2005
This review is from: The First Session CD (Audio CD)
Fantastic Raw early Hole sound with a cool booklet with a interview and early posters that Courtney designed. The cd contains Retard girl which is amazing and probeley can relate too,Phonebill song is recogniseable from the beginng part and thats also a brilliant song as well as Turpentine which was unreleased. The last track is Johnnies in the bathroom and this is A mixture of Courtney reading her diaries,People having Explict phone calls and creepy singing by girls.I guess they could have added Dicknail and Burn black to make it complete but its still a great EP for obsessive collectors!

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtney's done it again, 6 Mar 2001

This review is from: The First Session CD (Audio CD)
It's punky, it's brash, it's offensive. It's early hole doing what they do best, making excellent music. The content is a far cry from the pop-toned celebrity skin and more akin to pretty on the inside. This c.d is a must for every hole fan, it's a testament to why we first heard hole on our radio's and are still hearing them ten years on.

An excellently, carefully designed booklet packed with rare early photo's, posters and artwork, together with a reproduction of an early interview, raise this above the average. This CD is only let down by a short running time (under 20mins) and the fact that 3 out of 4 of the tracks are available on the 'My Body...' CD. However, worth it for the booklet alone!
